Bah. Women.
It continually amazes me that women fail to understand movies. They will walk out of an action movie proclaiming, much like a mule, it was terrible.
No one goes to see action, comedy, etc. movies because they expect god damn motherfucking masterpieces. They expect things to blow up, blood, general violence, probably T&A.
If I want excellent writting, I'm not going to look for the latest thing hollywood has shit out and packaged into a right proper shiny package. Even fucking brokeback wasn't all that 'amazing'. It was just fucking emotional. It tugged on the heartstrings. That doesn't make it good. Just makes it a non-action movie.
I go to movies to laugh. Or to be entertained. Not to cry. I have had enough sadness in my life, that 'does this movie make me want to eat a cyanide slushy' is not high on my priority list. Most of the time, 'does this movie make me want to think about something' is just one place above that. Because, hey, I want to go and shut down my brain for an hour or 2, and just watch someone elses script play out.
Sure, I've seen it all before, there's nothing new in 'guy' movies. I can predict the shit. I'm good like that. But it doesn't matter. Cause I'm there for the 'splodies. Not the writting.
But what gets me is that 'chick flicks' are somehow more intrinsically valuable, meaningful, and better.

I put chick flicks and action flicks on equal rank. Neither is going to be written well (usually), but will hopefully be fun. There will always be some that are terrible no matter what. (Serendipity is the worst chick flick I've ever seen.)
I do, however, like movies that make me think, but I rarely go to a movie for that reason. (It's just an added bonus.) I, like you, go to be entertained. And if any girl tells you that a chick flick is a work of art, you can just put the crazy stamp on her forehead. I don't know a single girl that thinks they're somehow "better" than action movies (even if some prefer them).

Then you don't know many girls :(
Maybe this is part of the reason I don't have many girl friends.

Probly. You tend to disasociate with the 'retarded can't think about anything but shoes and etc.' type of girl. So do I (most of the WOMEN I know I respect, even if they might, occasionally, make me want to shoot them in the foot with a nail gun)
I wouldn't call most chick flicks cinematic masterpieces either. Most of them are cute pieces of fluff that girls like to watch because we enjoy looking at attractive men in flattering lighting and that little "chick flick" happy feeling that comes from watching them. They are mindless entertainment every bit as much as action movies, though in a different way.
I confess, I do have a penchant for thought-provoking movies and a hard-core addiction to good plots and well-written dialogue. If you can give me a movie with those things in it, I will not care about the presence or lack of either designer shoes or things going kablooie. But even I like a little mindless entertainment now and then.
I actually enjoy most "dick flicks", maybe it's because I'm a violent person. Maybe it's because the guys in action movies are hotter than the "metros" in most chick flicks these days (ugh...I hate polo shirts). I'm actually currently digging the whole graphic novel trend in movies, they're fun and kitschy!
I also like artsy films, because most of them are really funny in a way that most mainstream comedies aren't. I get tired of the same jokes over and over again in mainstream comedies. I like something unusual, a little quirky.
